WASHINGTON -- More than 80 grassroots organizations, consumer groups, civil rights organizations, innovative businesses, technology experts and public interest advocates filed a letter with the Federal Communications Commission on Friday, signaling broad support for strong Network Neutrality rules.

New America Foundation Commends Asm. Bradford for Introducing Banking Development Districts Legislation

SACRAMENTO - Landmark economic revitalization legislation intended to help working Californians build wealth was introduced  yesterday by California State Assemblymember Steven Bradford (D-Gardena). AB 38 would create Banking Development Districts (BDDs) throughout the state of California, helping financial institutions locate and provide services in areas that currently lack investment.

New America Foundation Commends IRS Project Helping California Workers Claim Refunds, Stimulate Economy

SACRAMENTO -- More than 46,000 California workers who may have missed out on a significant federal tax credit - and local economies that may be losing the stimulus effect of workers spending those credits - are getting a boost from the Internal Revenue Service this November. The IRS is mailing notices to targeted filers this week and next week as part of a special outreach project in California to encourage more families to claim their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which the New America Foundation found stimulates local economies but suffers from low claim rates in the state.

New America Foundation Commends Launch of San Francisco's Kindergarten to College Program

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Mayor Gavin Newsom and Treasurer José Cisneros today announced the launch of Kindergarten to College (K2C), the nation's first universal children's savings account program. K2C will open and seed college savings accounts for every kindergartner entering public school in San Francisco. The goal is to put all school children on the path to college.

A new issue brief from New America's Early Education Initiative sheds light on what's missing as states build data systems to analyze children's progress over time. Today, the New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative, Electronic Frontier Finland, Hispalinux, Global Partners & Associates, Open Rights Group, and the Open Spectrum Alliance responded to the European Commission's questionnaire on the Open Internet and Net Neutrality. Thereply focuses on the Internet as a result of the interconnection of thousands of neutral networks and the harm caused by discriminatory network management practices and fragmentation caused when network operators provide different definitions for "Internet access."

Detroit Digital Justice Coalition Awarded $2 Million to Enhance Local Information Economy

New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative announced that the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition (DDJC) is receiving approximately $2 million in federal stimulus funds to expand its community organizing and economic development efforts in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park, Michigan. The Open Technology Initiative has supported the DDJC since its inception in 2009. The federal grant comes through a partnership between the DDJC and Michigan State University.

OTI Files Response to AT&T's Mischaracterization of Paid Prioritization on the Internet

The New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative (OTI) on Monday filed a letter in response to the myriad misrepresentations made by AT&T to the Federal Communications Commission regarding OTI's views on the issue of prioritization and protecting an open Internet.

The letter further clarifies the difference between established practices that allow business or enterprise customers make traffic prioritization decisions and the 'pay to play' Internet model sought by AT&T and other broadband providers.

The Open Technology Initiative Helps Bring $11.8 Million for Broadband Adoption in Philadelphia
